Planning + Design

Project Groundwork creates quality design solutions resulting in site developments that are sensitive to community and of appropriate scale for a given region or market.

Our civil engineers and landscape architects specialize in natural resources-based recreation, corridors, urban and site design, parks, public spaces and restoration projects. Much of our experience has been gained in semi-arid and arid climates, and a significant number of our recreation projects are situated along shorelines.

We are strategic thinkers and enjoy projects
with public outreach components.

Our capabilities include:
strategic planning, program development, schematic/conceptual design and design development, preparation of construction plans, specifications, cost estimation, construction administration and management, along with operations and maintenance considerations.

We work for:
cities, counties, public planning organizations, private individuals and entities engaged in commercial and residential development, as well as not-for-profit organizations engaged in cultural enrichment and conservation.

Land Exchange
Viability Assessment

Striking a balance

A primary goal of the land exchange viability assessment is to develop a strategy to promote salmon conservation and private property ownership. The assessment is the result of a chain of events and borne from discussions involving stakeholders from federal, state and local agencies as well as local and national not-for-profit conservation organizations.

Project Groundwork is assisting Natural Resources with the assessment by providing mapping, facilitation and a report.

Water and family-oriented day use

Project Groundwork developed the upland design and mitigation planting plan documents for the day use, shoreline trail, and boat launch areas off-island at Crescent Bar. The day use area includes picnic shelters positioned for up and down river views, as well as restroom and parking facilities. The facilities and amenities are sited in a blend of multi-purpose turf areas, riparian, and upland restoration areas for a mix of park and wildland experiences as well as habitat benefits. The boat launch area layout improves circulation and allows for queuing areas, pull-through tow-vehicle parking, as well as a marina side plaza and restroom facilities.

Saddlerock Trails Assessment

Sustainability
for a city icon

Chelan-Douglas Land Trust wanted an understanding
of existing site conditions for stewardship planning of the iconic Saddlerock area, which they are jointly purchasing from WA DNR

Saddlerock Trails Assessment

Saddlerock Trails Assessment

Sustainability for a city icon

Since 2007, Project Groundwork has been assisting the city of Wenatchee and the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust (CDLT) in developing trail inventories, trail planning and design, trailhead site selection and design, public outreach, local agency permitting, grant funding compliance and construction management.

Through a grassroots fundraising effort, CDLT developed a plan to purchase the Saddlerock property from Washington State Department of Natural Resources and transfer ownership to the City of Wenatchee. For years, miles of unmaintained user-defined trails have cropped up. In response, CDLT is developing a stewardship plan, a major component of which is the formalization of a trails network. PG staff developed evaluation criteria based on Forest Service construction and maintenance standards to identify trails requiring reroute or closure, then classified existing trails, identified potential realignment corridors and prioritized the revisions. The plan also identifies additional disturbed areas for upland restoration.

Check out the Wenatchee World article about work we're doing to help CDLT with planning for Saddlerock.

The Wenatchee World just featured an article on the project we are currently working on with Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, involving Saddlerock, the surrounding area, and trail stewardship.

This beloved local landmark is a favorite for hikers, as its easy access and breathtaking views are enticing for quick jaunts. However without previously having a stewardship plan in action it currently risks damage from a myriad of user-generated trails. Read the article.

Last week, we helped the Wenatchee Downtown Association and the City of Wenatchee acknowledge outstanding work by drafting students at Wenatchee High School.

The students developed 3D building models of downtown buildings, and the aim is for them to be uploaded to Google Earth.

We are glad to be a part of encouraging the development of technical skills and sense of community.
